The Providence Community Baptist Church was established by the late Rev. Willie L. Scott, being led by the Spirit of God and assisted by his wife, Beulah. On November 1, 1981 the first service was held at 38 Austin Avenue in Marietta, Georgia. Twenty-one persons were present in that service and a family of three united with this mission church. The name of that family is not given.
From this very humble beginning the church continued to grow and flourish. In February 1982 the first revival was held and 68 persons were added to the church family. During Rev. Scott’s eighteen years of leadership the following ministries were established: Sunday School, Junior Church, Transportation Ministry, Community Outreach Ministry, Daily Bread Ministry, Deacons Ministry, Choir Ministry, Usher’s Ministry, Pastor’s Aid Ministry, Baptist Women’s Ministry and the Providence Early Learning Academy was birthed. To accommodate the growth of the church, the adjacent properties were purchased and the educational building was added. Rev. Scott resigned in 1998 to answer God’s call to serve as an international missionary in Uganda Africa. Providence now has missionaries serving in Ethiopia, Brazil as well as Uganda.
Rev. Robert L. Wilson was called to serve as pastor after the resignation of Rev. Scott, Rev. Wilson served from 1998 to 1999. Rev. Wilson resigned from Providence to serve at the North American Mission Board. Rev. Albert Johnson was then asked to serve as interim pastor. His tenure was from July 2000 until June 2001.
In June 2001, Rev. John H. Mason accepted the call to pastor the Providence Community Baptist Church. Rev. Mason has proceeded to establish the vision God has given him to grow the church spiritually and then numerically. This move is evident through the introduction of several new ministries: the PCBC website; the newsletter, Providence Speaks; Deacon Family Ministry; Stewardship Ministry; New Members Ministry; and the Annual Christian Heritage Award. To make the church’s presence known in the community, the church has partnered with Park Street Elementary School, The Extension (Women's Division), and Nelson Price Treatment Center (now closed). The church has been instrumental in sending workers to help on the home mission field in New Orleans, LA; Mobile, AL; Gulfport, MS; Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA, Kentucky, North Carolina and others.
Most recently, besides providing seminars and workshops on leadership skills, marriage, and finances, the Sunday School has been revised and renamed. It is now known as Bible Discovery Hour and was revised to facilitate the growth aspect of the overall church. Spiritual Gifts assessments are an ongoing component of the church’s growth vision as well as ongoing usher training and the addition of a Young Adult Ministry.
As God continues to bless, we look forward to many years of God’s blessings remembering that Providence is a “Church Where God is Praised and People are Loved.”
Providence is affiliated with Noonday Baptist Association of the Southern Baptist Convention.
